“ARTifical Garden”

Living in any urban population center has a way of splendidly distorting the senses on a regular basis.  The frequently epileptic combination of neon lights and strange bellowing noises make it ever more difficult to find authenticity (traditionally defined) yet easier than ever to appreciate it in its many forms.  The biggest questions in this regard tend to come up on the matter of what is actually authentic in those places that are almost entirely conceived, built and maintained by human hands and minds.

It might no longer be acceptable in a modern society to see black and white ways of real vs not.  Electronics are now so hopelessly coupled with life that they (along with the pregnant world’s they carry inside them) are arguably just as real as the hands that operates them.  Lives unto themselves that are demanding a shifted comprehension of their context among us. Where could we stumble upon any real oasis of authenticity in a sweltering city of ambition and counterfeit.  Might we need to update what a garden means along with some other things?

island6 has joined creative forces with three incredible artists to present “ARTifical Garden”, on display in the first floor lobby of the Shanghai World Financial Center from October 24th until November 16th.  Curated by Kenta Torimoto and along  with Lu Xinjian from Art Labor Gallery, Lee Jaehyo from M Art Center and PRISIM Design, Liu Dao confronts these themes at the intersection of real and artificial, natural and man-made.  This eclectic mix of minds and ideas collide to honor the sixth anniversary of the Shanghai World Financial Center.  The SWFC (or 'bottle opener' building as it has affectionately come to be known as by many Shanghai residents) was built and is owned by the Mori family, a cultural and artistic pillar in the community and the region.  So come join us and, perhaps, redefine somethings.
