"Bicycle Kingdom" (自行车王国)
"Bicycle Kingdom" by island6 Art Collective (Liu Dao)
// BLURB //
Bicycles have been among the most popular things in China for as long as anyone can remember. It’s such a ubiquitous part of the culture that even the president of the United States received two bikes from Beijing in 1986. It represents, and has always represented, the modern era of Chinese lifestyle. Unlike the casualness of Europe or America, bicycles were not used for recreational purposes here, but were the main means of transportation. It wasn’t until the early 2000s that bicycle registration requirements and annual taxation on bikes were cancelled as they became outnumbered by motor vehicles. But the biking tradition has not died out with the increasing number of cars. Rather, it is going social. Bikes, however green they are, cannot alone compete with the convenience of cars and motorcycles, but shared bike systems are taking over China in order to reduce traffic in the cities. You don’t use your bike all the time anyway – why wouldn’t somebody else do in the meantime
