Contemporary Istanbul 2013
November 2013 marks the 8th edition of Contemporary Istanbul and Liu Dao’s first trip to the rapidly growing art fair.
Istanbul is one of the few transcontinental cities in the world, a characteristic that truly transfers to the artistic and cultural makeup of city firmly planted in both Europe and Asia. Lying on both sides of the Bosporus channel and the Sea of Marmara, which connects the Black Sea and the Mediterranean, the Istanbul skyline features both minarets and church spires all coupled with call to prayers and hip lounge music. While mostly known for its thousand-year-old history and architecture, Istanbul also has a fascinating contemporary art scene worthy of their 2010 nickname “European Capitol of Culture”.
Contemporary Istanbul is rapidly becoming one of the most important meeting points of Eastern and Western art markets, featuring over 100 selected galleries from Asia, Europe, the US and the Middle East. Creating a unique platform of contemporary art representative of many cultures, the fair represents the makeup of this unique city while also speaking to the collaborative effort of the Liu Dao collective itself. In its 8th edition, the fair will be held at the Istanbul Convention and Exhibition Center and the Istanbul Congress Center. Running from the 7th to the 10th of November, the fair will offer a comprehensive range of Turkish and international art including painting, video works, sculpture, and installation from local and international galleries. Alongside the fair, there will be additional programs, parties and events including Art Istanbul, a city-wide week-long initiative which will see participating institutions, museums, foundations and galleries present a program of openings, artist talks and panel discussions.
Istanbul stock up on the raki, Liu Dao is coming to town!
