"Fine, White, and Translucent" (精美,白和透亮)
// BLURB //
There are a couple of things we will have to talk about. Firstly, it’s the etymology of the word China. Perhaps it comes from the Sanskrit word “cina”, perhaps it was derived from the name of the ancient Chinese state Qin, or it might have something to do with the name of the Jin dynasty. Any of these could make sense since Chinese words can seem impossible to pronounce for someone who’s not used to them. It’s not surprising that a new word is made each time somebody tries to reproduce the original sound. Probably the only Chinese word that has been in use but has been preserved in its original form by Westerners is the name of the Ming dynasty. On the other hand, China was so far from Europe that these words converged with the most well-known product coming from that region. Porcelain, the translucent material made of kaolin. Not only did it need meticulous work to produce it, but it was also delicate and strong. So much that the word China indicated quality and prestige. Well, times change. But if you own a Ming dynasty vase, you can be sure it retains the spirit of the past.
