I’m not even sure you’re aware of the extent to which your older brother was legend in and around our neighborhood. If you ask anyone who’s anyone worth asking they’ll tell you the good bits. About how he made love on the tops of mountains to women the likes of which most of us would cut a finger off (with a dull blade) just to get a passing glimpse of topless. Or about how he fought men twice his size five at a time for getting smart-mouthed with his friends (and especially relatives as I know you’ve seen first hand). About the time he rescued that girl from a burning apartment building while all the fire fighters were looking on in resignation. The total losses already chalked up for them. “It’s too hot and out of control,” you could see them thinking. Past tense residents inside. I still think about him sometimes. Especially when I walk by that spot where everything went wrong. The last place he was a hero. [Ryan Nimmo]
