One of the most visually engaging creations of the Liu Dao collective is "Impulse Momentum", which opens myriad possibilities with a complex digital interface system. The observer becomes participant as the extended panel where one sees a visual undulation coupled with an actual fluidity of light emissions react to the individual movements of the active audience member. The lights (red LEDs) scintillate in a response to whatever physical signal related to the immediate presence of the participant, an audio experience is brought to life in a symphonic manner which mirrors the highly complex visual composition of intricate lines which are interwoven on the PVC surface of the artwork. The asymmetrical design of the contrastive black and white “web” is visually intriguing, reminiscent of hallucinations made possible by early experiments of a metaphysical order by the early modernist school: the actual plane is a rippling surface which recalls amorphic geography. The lights once signaled cascade and the music emits a magical atmosphere, a magical seduction of the senses in artistic unison with new technology. The sound is sheerly acoustic, electro-magnetic relays responding to the physical proximity of the individual whom interacts with the work via infrared sensors that trigger the audio emission.
