BLURB

The secret of keeping a balance is to just keep moving, never be still, and restrict unnecessary movements to as few as possible during a performance. The most risky moments of a balancing act are like Alexander Calder’s precisely constructed mobiles. They need a stable, peaceful environment to keep their abstract, but well-organized forms. Once their environment changes, the abstract order takes a different shape, yet the equilibrium remains. The performer moves forward for the same reason. It’s as though moving forward in time through, for example, marriage; trying to move toward some unknown destination while risking a fatal slip at any moment. Alexander and Louisa Calder spent forty five years together. Is that not the riskiest balancing act of their lives? And we jitter and wait if the performer can finish the show alive. [András Gál]
