BLURB

One of the major topics within the art world ever since the historical avant-garde is whether any object can possibly have inherent artistic qualities or it is just a matter of choosing the right context. Marcel Duchamp’s artwork, the “Fountain”, a simple porcelain urinal set the topic for a century: can anything be an artwork if exhibited in the sacred space of the museum? In other words: is the artwork itself important at all? Almost a century later another artist Sophie Calle reversed the question. In 1991 thirteen artworks were stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, including a Vermeer and three Rembrandt paintings. In her project “Last Seen”, Calle interviewed people who worked in the museum and were in touch with the painting on a daily basis. She asked them to describe the artworks, which none of them could fully do. Photographs of the museum’s wall with the empty frames were exhibited along with the interviews, which not only reflected on the fragility of the artistic context, but also raised the question: can we ever truly know a masterpiece?
