Liu Dao’s multidisciplinary foundations are presented clearly in "Afternoon", where the individual components of the group’s skills are shown in dichotomy. A bold black paper cut dominates one portion of the rice paper canvas, showing the silhouette of a tree leaning out from a mound or a riverbank, dressed in leaves caught in the afternoon sun. A young woman swings from one of the branches in a red LED configuration, an energetic animation with extra definition brought out from the variations in each pixel’s brightness–a new technique Liu Dao has been using that differs from the more pop, uniform pixilated images seen in 2009. The woman is much smaller in size than the tree but commands equal entrancement, and although the computerized code and the paper cut interact, it’s only by a minimum connection by her hands around one branch. The red is separated from the black, the machine from the paper, the animated from the static, the modernity from the tradition. In this rare work, Liu Dao’s modes of artistic existence are expressed in their individual hemispheres. [Pete Bradt]
