BLURB

"Himavanta" is the second work in a two-piece series depicting Buddhist visions of reincarnation. Like "Kinnara", the first, "Himavanta" features an extraordinary paper cut showing a modern building unable to contain a mammoth tree that is growing outward from within. The image is mythical and fantastical but also pertinent in the era of globalization.
Like the mythological animal which is half bird and half man, the artwork is a crossbreed of influences, styles and mediums. The teakwood frame and beige paper collage stand as bastions of traditions in carpentry and Chinese arts, but through an embedded network of LEDs, a high-tech universe shines from behind the paper canvas. Two colorful birds hop along the branches at the top of the frame, while different shades come and go in different rooms throughout the building.
Like many beings from Oriental folklore, China itself has undergone many reincarnations throughout its history, and for Liu Dao, who are based in Shanghai, they see a bright, new national configuration represented in the illuminated buildings growing up across their city. [Pete Bradt]
