A flock of white LED pigeons flutter restlessly and ceaselessly across the lambda print of a Taibei street scene, illuminated from a lightbox concealed within.
Street pigeons today co-exist with their human counterparts in an uneasy truce, roosting in nooks, landing on ledges and gutters, feeding on food scraps. But unbeknownst to many, the common street pigeon’s humble circumstances belie its long and close relationship with the human race. Apart from primates, they are the closest to humans in the animal kingdom in intelligence, spatial awareness and behaviour modification. Descended from the Rock Dove, a cave-dwelling species found in coastal regions, the history of pigeons has closely mirrored the rise and fall of man’s fortunes. Pigeons were worshipped as gods and goddesses by the ancient Sumerians more than 5000 years ago, and since then have played a silent but suportive role in man’s endeavours in industry, agriculture, commerce -and especially in communication, bearing messages for families, armies, news agencies and even financial houses on Wall Street. And in recent years, the pigeon population in many cities has proliferated as a result of growing prosperity and a corresponding increase in food supply.
"Flying Away", a typical scene of a bustling Asian city forms the tapestry on which these now-ubiquitous avians play out their lives. The absence of the human form in this piece brings into greater relief the presence of the birds that are everywhere in our lives, yet perpetually invisible to most of us. Throughout the march of time, through the transformations wrought by our aspirations, ambitions and advancements, we have had the unassuming companionship of these winged creatures. In this piece, Liu Dao thus crafts a poignant reminder of the ironically enduring nature of change in our lives, and the journey we have taken through the centuries. [Loo Ching Ling 吕晶琳]
