Under the untroubled face of a sleeping beauty is a neural network resembling nothing of the smoothly simplistic exterior, with tens of billions of neurons in a construction that morphs, grows, dies, shifts blood supplies and commands magnetic fields. But the heartbroken, forsaken and forgotten don’t look inward to the metabotropic receptors, the adrenergic neurotransmitters, the tyrosine-kinase receptors and neuropeptides that dominate university discussion but outward to the tens of millions of miles of the planet’s highway system which can take someone away to new worlds again and again without one ever leaving her own mind.
And therein lies the hitch: on the edge of Mongolia’s Ugiinuur Lake, on the gold beaches of the Penghu Archipelago, in the sunny fields of Dongchuan, storm clouds in the mind will follow if not faced or squashed.
We Dream in Order to Forget illustrates a young girl cleaning her mind of sorrow with fantasies of a better present and dreams of a prettier future, and connects Liu Dao’s use of inventive expression through circuitry to the neural network of the human mind by embodying Francis Crick and Graeme Mitchison’s theory about dreaming (1983). In their theory, the neuroscientists propose that our neural pathways continually seek and form new connections with each other throughout the brain. Many of these connections are ultimately useless, and so the purpose of dreaming is to have the connections reviewed and then discarded or kept, depending on efficiency levels. With the help of dreams, one’s thought process can be streamlined, much like the electronic signal that travels sequentially through the LEDs of the artwork. We dream awake and dream asleep, always to find new worlds that are different from the last. [Pete Bradt]
