The delicate tiles of an ancient game still have the ability to captivate our minds as we place each tile on the board with contemplative skill. The word domino is derived from a costume used for masquerades in Venice which at one time depicted French priests. The black hoods and white dots of the priests faces were commonly referred to as domini. However in Chinese dominoes the tiles represent stations of hierarchy, the earth of course being less powerful than the heavens, then man of course submits below the earth, these tiles are in union with military tiles which have their own cultural significance. Liu Dao toys with the concept of rank and leader as the word domini comes from the latin root dominus, meaning master and how no one can resist the sweet innocence in the eyes of a dog, rendering man submissive to his master.
