BLURB

As a boy, I’d spend a few weeks every summer at my uncle’s farm. I often slept in the shed behind the farm, on the top of the hay, and in the mornings the newborn kittens would climb up to my feet and lick my toes. Sometimes the cats would even be walking on my face to wake me up. After having swallowed a big pot of warm milk with white bread in it, I went off to the fields. The days were filled with chores designed to build my character, such as the assembly of boys in the commune in order to bring the cattle down from the mountain pastures. Most of the days I was busy planting potatoes on the fields or cleaning the barn with a pitchfork. Toppling from a bale of hay, I once kneed myself in the face, causing my nostrils to spout like a sprung fire hydrant and my cousin to die of laughter. In the afternoons we’d chase the frogs out of the pond and go fishing. We’d use perches and wrap old potato sacks around, but hardly ever had something in it. When not at the water place, I enjoyed watching the neighbor’s granny. She used to be in her garden every day, starting after the midday heat until someone called her for dinner. First she’d cleared a patch of soil, then take a fistful of seeds and plant them into the hole. Afterwards she watered the land with a rusty jar and sat next to it, as if she was watching the plants grow. I often find myself thinking about these days. The taste of the fresh milk, the scratchy hay in my underwear, the dirt of the dry ground on my feet, as if it was yesterday. Deep inside I wish so much that the old lady was still there, watching her plants grow. [Melani Murkovic]
