“It’s hard to think about it you know- how we’re all just mush” a lady says in garbled Chinese. I understand this. Suddenly. I’m reeling thinking about the gravity in the truth of what she says and how flippantly she offers it up to a stranger. If my communication abilities were a little more sophisticated we might be having a real conversation after that one. One I’d remember for a while. One I’d tell people about at a bar after too many drinks, botching and exaggerating a number of details along the way no doubt. That blond I saw earlier made my lower body tingle but yes, now that I think about it, we’re all just…mush. Such a profoundly bold statement for this old woman to paint me with. Who is this lady I wonder half aloud. I shudder at the thought of how nuanced and brilliant her children and grandchildren must be after an upbringing peppered by such deep ruminations. They’re probably artists or writers or whatever the inheritors of deep bestowed family wisdom do for rent money in this city. I have imagined these lives and the social impacts they might have when my Chinese friend lets me know that this is not what she said. What she actually said was much more crass and hollow. And I go back about my business. [Ryan Nimmo]
