BLURB

In 1920, famed Austrian neurologist, Sigmund Freud, published an essay titled, “Beyond the Pleasure Principle.” This essay offered a new theoretical approach, which differed from his previous (and well-known) ideas about sexuality, the libido, and the life/Eros instinct that governed human action. In “Beyond the Pleasure Principle,” Freud proposed that ultimately, the death instinct is what truly drives us miserable mortals. Under the Pleasure Principle, people seek pleasure and avoid pain. Pretty straight forward, right? In undertaking an action or a line of thought, we seek a final outcome that lowers an unpleasurable tension. Ok, great. But (there has to be a but), it is incorrect to think that the pleasure principle is dominant in mental processes. Ok, then blah blah, there’s some stuff that regulates this principle so we don’t destroy ourselves in the quest for pleasure, blah blah, more stuff, then… We learn that instincts are the most abundant source of excitement. The mental apparatus should bind instinctual excitation; otherwise, a failure provokes a disturbance – traumatic neurosis. You know what instincts do, right? They are ultimately an urge to restore the self to a neutral, or earlier state of things. Death, then, is our first instinct - the instinct to return to the state of nothingness. The lifelong tension that we thought we were relieving with pleasure can only be released when it cancels itself out (death). The pleasure principle (sounded so nice at the beginning, didn’t it?) is in the service of the death instinct. Death is the real pleasure. I digress. Go on and enjoy these lovely butterflies.
