BLURB

I was always told, as were many children who spent any time in America, that if you dug a hole too deep you’ll pop out in China. Just sort of poke your head out suddenly and be lost forever, your parents staring agape at a narrow hole in the sand thousands of miles away. I remember always laughing… cautiously of course, as I’d imagine my ten year old self sort of pop out on a bustling Asian street dressed in swim trunks with a little plastic shovel. You dug too far!! They’d all yell at me in Chinese. I knew it sounded made up but what evidence could I possibly muster to counter their claim. I’m old enough now to know that, if I had actually somehow dug far enough from one of those Delaware beaches and ‘popped out’ on the other side I would’ve been underwater thousands of miles off the coast of Perth Australia. A hole from Istanbul would leave you rather wet as well out in the middle of the South Pacific ocean somewhere between South America and New Zealand. Speaking of New Zealand: if you dug from Madrid you’d end up just east of Palmerston North, New Zealand. A town I doubt anyone besides a New Zealander has heard of. From Honk Kong you’d end up in Argentina, just next to the Bolivian border on a small lake called Laguna De Pozuelo. And if you dug from Shanghai? You’d end up somewhere in Uruguay right along the Argentinian border, just west of Salto to be more specific. So, if you’re going to try to dig a hole like that be careful or at least do a little research beforehand. [Ryan Nimmo]
