While many art fairs these days give extreme lip service to supporting emerging artists and galleries, Swab Barcelona has spent the last decade walking the walk. Swab is one of the only contemporary fairs around founded by a collector, a distinction that has led to refreshing change in standard approach and philosophy. One such change is the emphasis on supporting and encouraging younger people to begin collecting, starting with affordable art and working their way up. They have also encouraged young talents to introduce their work into the art market scene and gain valuable exposure. Swab has structured its format largely to accommodate these ideas and it is considered to be one of the reasons it’s enjoys such success and critical acclaim.
Swab Barcelona takes place at the Fira de Barcelona, a historic trade fair institution which has been hosting significant city events since 1932. The 400,000 square meter floor space has been home to trade shows, congresses, economic forums and of course Art Fairs. The space is responsible for over 500 annual events in and around it, generating over 2.5 billion euros for the city each year.
