“Under the Glow of the Red Lanterns”

Calendar. This unassuming and mundane word evokes an infinite number of subjective experiences for people across the globe. For some, it’s a photographic collection of prize chickens unveiled month by month in the corner of their kitchen. For others, it’s an indispensable electronic schedule that rules their lives and the timing of morning lattes. In China, the calendar is all these things and more, determining everything from your personality, your romance prospects, and your relationship with family both living and dead. In the land of the red dragon, two calendars twist and roll over one another, weaving their way into the sinew of Chinese lives. Both methods of measuring time make space for the dazzling Chinese New Year celebration that marks the turnover of the lunisolar year. Celebrated around the world, Chinese New Year is a breathtaking whirl of red, shimmering fireworks, and lion dances that ushers in the vitality of a New Year.

We’re honoring this remarkably exquisite, once-a-year event in true island6 form – with an exhibition that draws on the myriad cultural influences and global reach of the Lunar New Year. From lucky red underwear to appeasing ancestors (living and decidedly not living), Liu Dao celebrates the rich heritage of Chinese New Year. (read more >>>)
