"Cheongsam Kingdom" (长衫王国)

The body-hugging traditional Chinese women’s garment called cheongsam (长衫) or qipao (旗袍) seems traditional today, but it was in fact a social statement on modernity a century ago. This long dress originates from a Manchu male long garment at a time when women, ironically, wore trousers and jacket. Along with the ending of the Qing dynasty, however, modernist movements called for the liberalization of social roles, acting against gender segregation, bound feet and long hair. Cheongsam was created in the 1920s and was soon popularized by singers and actresses for it was masculine and, at the same time, feminine, wild and brave. One of the icons of the era was Lu Xiaoman (陆小曼). She was a painter, writer, singer, and actor who studied in Europe and spoke fluent English and French. She married and divorced once before getting remarried to the modernist poet Xu Zhimo (徐志摩). It was scandalous. Yet, this piece of fine dress expresses everything like-minded women of the era stood for: the ideal of an independent and educated woman not bound by any social tradition.
