Beagles. You never really see them roaming the streets of Shanghai, or China for that matter. If you want to know why, close your eyes, and take a deep breath. It’s that inexplicable China smell. If you didn’t already know, beagles have an extremely good sense of smell, thousands of times stronger than humans. They’re perfect hunting companions and sniffer dogs. This explains their lack of presence in Shanghai. This city oozes weird and wonderful smells, confusing for humans and downright bewildering for pooches. From juicy dumplings frying on street corners, to the whiff you get from the steaming gutters in the heat of summer, each day in Shanghai will no doubt be filled with endless smells. If you come across a beagle, or any poor animal with a nose in Shanghai, make sure to pat them on their overwhelmed head, and give them your condolences as you walk by. No wonder they tend to stick to England, where chou dou fu is scarce, but pies are aplenty.
