Put on your new face—you’re in Shanghai, baby, and there’s nothin’ new under the sun.
In 1922, many loyalist Russians came to Shanghai in hopes of escaping the fallout of revolution, building new lives from the bottom up. In the 1930s and 40s, refugees escaping European carnage came to Shanghai and were greeted with open arms as they waited out the war. Today, hipsters with long beards and redundant hobbies come to Shanghai in hopes of escaping the oppression of too many choices. They come here as an escape from families who love them too much and the risk of a 9-5 job with 401k and dental. You foreigners should thank God for delivering you from the bowels of the capitalist birthplace into the shark-filled sea of hyper-consumerist techno-apocalyptic Teslas and smartphones. Out of the frying pan, into the mega-city, right? What happens if you escape down one of those little alleyways though? Like a portal through time, you’re transported to a place where community still means something outside of the cellular world and where your art doesn’t move. Now get back here.
