In a way we are all like fish swaying in the sea searching for understanding and purpose. German philosopher Friedrich Nietzche came up with “Amor Fati”, the love of fate, as a way to find meaning. This Latin phrase describes the Stoic attitude of treating each and every moment as something to be embraced rather than avoided. It's all about falling in love with our story. Accepting the idea that even suffering or loss can enrich life in a way we can’t fathom right now. In Nietzsche’s words, “That one wants nothing to be different, not forward, not backwards, not in all eternity. Not merely bear what is necessary, still less conceal it but love it.” And love it we must, for there is no alternative. Let me explain, there is a controversial hypothetical concept known as the “eternal return”, in which the universe is recurring over infinite time and space. Think of it as having to live your life once more and innumerable times more, on a pixelated loop! To understand this concept and not be tormented by it would require a complete surrender to fate and love of life. If all else fails, just keep on swimming.
