"Shanshui Ziran" (自然山水)
// BLURB //
In his 1959 essay “Basic Thoughts Underlying Eastern Ethical and Social Practice”, D. T. Suzuki wrote, “Living is an act of creativity demonstrating itself.” To Suzuki, living was by definition a dynamic and engaged process of actions and reactions that were creative by virtue of the unknowable circumstances constantly washing over all of existence. Creativity therefore is not simply something that one does, but is an existential mode akin to health— breathing, electrical activity in the brain, and the heart pumping blood are at once effortless and necessary for living. For some, this living-as-creativity opens a world of possibilities not before considered, allowing space for naturalness, spontaneity, and flourishing. It’s like when the folk rock Avett Brothers sing “Decide who to be, and go be it.” This goal, when achieved through the Daoist method of action through non-action is not unlike the winding paths of a traditional Shan Shui painting. Long and winding, beautiful and mysterious, we find at the end of the path, harmony.
