"A Full Turn" (转体)
// BLURB //
One complete and deliberate motion. A poised ballet slipper, spinning on the stage, a perfectly executed pirouette. A simple polka dot is chosen by Yayoi Kusama to fill the surreal worlds that she creates. There is endless gratification to be found with three hundred and sixty degrees. If you want, you can find it within Japanese calligraphy in the form of the ensō, the Zen circle. It represents strength, the universe, as well as enlightenment. Those who study calligraphy will often follow the discipline of drawing each character without pause or hesitation, and so each ensō is drawn with one brushstroke. We cannot help being drawn to the fluidity of each symbol and character in calligraphy. These kinds of dynamic artworks are essentially visible outpourings of energy and emotion, and so behind each brushstroke you can imagine a Morita Shiryū type, bent over the canvas, with a furrowed brow and steady hands.
