"All Dressed Up, Nowhere to Go" (打扮漂亮, 无处可去)
// BLURB //
Where do we go when everyone else has gone? In other words, how do we exist alone, as wholly independent beings? This question would have seemed ridiculous and impractical to many ancient Chinese thinkers. We are, as Kongzi might say, socially embedded creatures, unable to escape our relationality. But what if the choice is not ours? What if it’s less of a matter of escaping from others, and more a matter of robbery of choice? In the apocalypse, we may find ourselves in this exact situation. In this case, we may need to rely on Kierkegaard’s understanding of self as “a relation of self relating itself to its own self” in order to preserve our relationality. If this fails, however, we could always become collectors — collectors of stuff and of stories, and by extension, other selves. What better to collect than clothing? The revelations you can uncover through an outfit! Each pair of pants you find tells a story about the person who once wore them.The friends you can make, with this shirt and those shoes... Whoever said we couldn’t find the sublime in the end of times?
