The delicate dance of loyalty, or “Zhongzi Wu” (忠字舞), originated in the late 60s during the cultural revolution in China. An exuberant folk dance comprised of simple steps such as, arms stretched to the skies above, small leaps, and pleasant twirls. Everyone from school children to factory laborers and even ayis was prepared to showcase this dance; it quickly became a daily fixture of life. In present day we have a collective display of different sorts. “Public square dancing” is the literal translation of “Guangchang Wu” (广场舞), a type of choreographed activity taking place every morning and night across the country. Groups of middle-aged and elderly women gather in park squares, shopping malls, and even sidewalks to participate in this lively performance. These women are often called, “Dama” (大妈), literally “big mother.” The loud music drowns out the honking and revving of traffic. An amalgamation of sights and sounds capture your senses. These lovely damas have put on quite the show for all to witness. Would you care to join? It’s quite easy, just follow along. Swing your arms from left to right and repeat! It’s not that hard, now take a bow!
