Feelings are at the basis of all ideas. First you have feelings, and then, through those sensations, it develops into ideas – Jeff Koons
Burrhus Frederic Skinner, most commonly known as the father of operant conditioning, believed free will was an illusion. We don’t have the ability to choose unimpeded but rather every action is a direct consequence of a previous action. I sit down, you reward me with a treat. Or as Elliott Erwitt would say, “I bark at dogs and get odd reactions sometimes”. Ah yes, behaviorism in a nutshell! Life is but a series of rewards and punishments... don’t fight it too much. Cognitivism was a reaction to this theory and aimed at explaining how humans perceive, remember, and understand the world around them. How they reason, make decisions, why they make errors, basically the human experience. This theory is different than behaviorism in that it can’t be explained by behavior alone. Think about it, how can you explain Cassius Marcellus Coolidge’s “Dogs Playing Poker” (1894) paintings? You know what would be a good start? Feeding me!
