"Downtown Neon Sea" (繁华的霓虹海洋)
"Downtown Neon Sea" by island6 Art Collective (Liu Dao)
// BLURB //
Venturing out at night in Tokyo is a bit like getting in a submarine and diving deep down in the ocean. They say there are over 230,000 species in the oceans. Jawless, cartilaginous or bony fish, crabs, lobsters, barnacles, krills, whales, dolphins and seals are hiding in the dark. Each time someone like me submerges, hundreds of new species are discovered. I do this when I have nothing else to do and I imagine I’m Watanabe from Haruki Murakami’s Norwegian Wood. Sometimes I wonder around the city till dawn and I stop by these mesmerizing neon signs.  Unrecognizable figures pass by behind my back, but I can only feel the presence of their blurry shapes. They are lit, but mute. And then I realize I haven’t uttered a sound for hours. I float away from the shop signs that look more and more like mirrors when the Sun comes up. Seems like we are just glistening toys in each other’s eyes. Characters in each other’s video games. Fish in Damian Hirst’s pickle jars.
