It seems that we may stop here…Oh god. Why now? Why today, of all days? I can smell them from over here. Their slow movements, grunts, and waddles as they make their way to the bus. MY bus. I’ve been a driver for a few years now-- almost 18-- and it doesn’t get easier, especially since my liver started giving me trouble. Even as I myself get older, the banality of geriatric passengers only becomes more pronounced. I think that even if my own grandmother, God rest her soul, came out of the ground and tried to board, I would feel the exact same way. Disgusted, that is. Disgusted by their perfect white dentures, and their cheerful demeanors. By their small hats and broaches. I think worst of all is the way they hold their cellular phones-- with two hands, and always peering over or through their glasses as though they are atop a hill trying to read a sign at the bottom. And the way they look at me-- as though I am June Leaf’s dancer. Finally, they’re getting on. Bah! It’s days like these that I look forward to my retirement.
