Every time I happen upon a swing, I am reminded of “The Legend of the White Maiden”, a timeless Chinese folklore about the forbidden love between Xu Xian and Bai Suzhen. The pair fell in love while they were both immortals in heaven. However, their relationship was disallowed by celestial laws, and they were banished from paradise. Xu Xian was reincarnated into human form, and Bai Suzhen a spirit who took on a human form as the White Maiden.
One day, Xu Xian encountered a beautiful woman who was playing on a swing, it was Bai Suzhen. He was smitten by her beauty and grace, and the two fell in love all over again! Xu Xian was unaware of Bai Suzhen's true nature, and she kept her identity as a spirit hidden from him. The couple eventually got married and lived a happy life together, but their happiness was threatened when a Buddhist monk named Fahai discovered Bai Suzhen's true identity and tried to separate the couple. As the conflict between Fahai and Xu Xian escalated, Bai Suzhen transformed back into her spirit form and took refuge on the mountain, hoping to avoid further trouble. But Xu Xian refused to give up, and set out to find her, determined to protect their love and happiness at any cost. In the end, Xu Xian found his lover and the two were reunited, their love and devotion stronger than ever.
They returned to their home, and she continued to play on her forever swing, their happiness once again secured and protected, forever.
