There exists some delicate contention over the most notorious of sexual appliances and whether or not it inherently represents the penis. It can be a tough matter to wrangle as perspectives are quite gendered. One party claims that toy = penis, always and forever. But they’re almost always men and men see their willies everywhere. Polar opposition comes, of course, from women who like women and take advantage of the joys of penetration. This latter position seems more nuanced, so it is less arguable. Any attempt at contradiction is doomed to boring generalizations about what belongs where.
Perhaps the erotic niches of Japan can offer insight. The kanji itself, 淫具 “obscene tool,” is so utilitarian – a basic utensil, not an intricate replica.
