"Hippocampus Sabotage" (海马捣毁)

// BLURB //
Your identity is made up of memories. Places you have seen, stories you have heard; smells, tastes, sounds that you have accumulated. It’s hard to archive them carefully, and to differentiate them from your dreams. Dreams can be so incredibly convincing, that you find yourself questioning yourself whether they actually happened. Dreams are linked in part with the hippocampus, a structure in the brain used in consolidating memories. The activity of the hippocampus during sleep may explain why dreams create a combination of experience and knowledge, creating realistic scenarios. We rely on our unreliable memories, and so our lives are filled with little lies. Yesterday I dreamt we were in Portugal, walking along the sea wall. So I’ve been thinking about that stormy summer’s day in Esmoriz two years ago. I’ve been trying to remember what the sky really looked like that evening. It may have been a blur of greys and blues, the clouds heavy. Or maybe the colours were more violet in hue, with hazy tints of lilac and darkish blue. But the more I try and remember it, the more it slips away…
