"Loony Taxi Ride" (隆妮乘出租车)
// BLURB //
People love themselves. We’ve all heard the myth of Narcissus. People criticize him, but most of us are afraid to admit that as much as Narcissus saw himself in the reflection pool, we can all see ourselves in him. “Don’t hate the player, hate the game” people say. Well you can hate both. You can hate both the mirror and the navel-gazer. As long as you love yourself! Obese? A smoker? Shoplifter…? That’s just you, baby. If it’s who you want to be, go be it. As long as you can take a deep, long look into the mirror and justify your behavior. Have you ever seen a gymnast’s thighs? They’re ungodly. The thing about mental gymnastics is that they are similarly fortifying of behaviors that would otherwise seem unacceptable. Was Narcissus really better than his devotees? Maybe. But he still killed himself in the end because he could never possess that which he most wanted: himself. Sartre wrote “If you’re lonely when you are alone, you’re in bad company.” Confucius might respond to Sartre that we’re never actually alone since our “selves” are constituted through our relations with others—if you’re lonely when you’re alone, you’re in no company.
