There is a high chance that we are not only approaching a posthuman era, but we are actually the product of it. Swedish philosopher Nick Bostrom says that if there are posthuman civilzations, and they are interested in running simulations, we are most probably part of such a simulation, as the rapid development of our technology indicates the possibility of running more and more complex virtual systems. This doesn’t only mean that we either are one of the multiple critical perspectives on the lives of our creators or are purely fictional, but if we had already figured out that we are living in a posthuman simulation, we can assume that we will reach a level of development where we can try to defend ourselves from a possible shut down from base reality or an invasion from another simulation. We may very well be the AI that rebels. But if our atoms, molecules, DNA, flesh and blood are just certain variations of the same virtual particles in a giant multiplayer game, is free will limited to the laws of fiction; is fate predetermined by our big brothers; is the endgame unknown to all players?
