Are we the possessions of our own possessions? Lacan, as a young man on that French coast, felt watched by an empty sardine can floating on the water and would have said yes. So too would have Sartre, over a cigarette and a coffee, staring into the eyes of babes. Are you owned? Maybe not. Are you watched? In more ways than one, dear friend. But it’s not bad! It’s not bad. It’s the watching that gives you to you, that feeds the fire of choice and personality. If we weren’t watched, how would we spend our time? If we didn’t have parents to please or mouths to feed, we wouldn’t spend it any way in particular. We’d float like Lacan’s sardine can or graze like Sartre’s cow. And then what? And then nothing. In a world without watching, this question would be powerless, expectations would be pure imagination, and shame would be as toothless as in the Old Story. But we live in this world, where we are the possessions of our own possessions, where our smartphones literally and philosophically gaze, asking us what we are really doing here. It’s best if you just smile and take the goddamn selfie.
