The “collective unconscious” as coined by psychoanalyst Carl Jung, refers to the part of each individual’s unconscious mind that is derived from ancestral memory and is a shared experience common to all humans. This differs from your individual unconscious, which includes repressed memories and experiences unique to you. Japanese writer Haruki Murakami in his famous novel “Kafka on the Shore” tells the story of two different worlds, consciousness and unconsciousness. The definition of human life is living on the borderline, he says. A life of harmony requires the perfect balance between our hidden drives and the character we display to the public. According to Jung there’s four major archetypes. The persona is the mask worn in public to please others. The shadow is everything we try to repress or hide. The anima/animus are the qualities we possess from the opposite gender. Lastly, the self is the highest reach of the psych, it’ self-realization; everything we are, once were, and could potentially become. It requires us to overcome everything. Like looking at your reflection in the rearview mirror of the cab you’re riding now. What do you really see?
