All good things must come to an end...at least that’s what people say. And yet what are endings if not new beginnings? After his romantic relationship ruptured, French sculptor Auguste Rodin famously wrote, “Atrocious madness, it’s the end. I won’t be able to work anymore…yet I love you furiously.” Contrary to his belief, it was during this time that Rodin created some of his most passionate sculptures, like The Kiss(1882). Humans are creatures of habit, although it can be difficult to accept it. Who’s to say the difference between being stuck in a rut or settled into a monotonous routine? There's a chengyu, bàn tú ér fèi (半途而废) which literally translates to “walk half the road and give up.” But what if, giving up was simply a necessary end to bring on a fresh start? You see it really is all about perspective. One man’s special day, could be another’s death day. Or is that not how the saying goes? I digress. The point is sometimes endings are necessary to bring forth new beginnings, and to that I will always say ganbei!
