"Tai On Express" (太安森林)
"Tai On Express" by island6 Art Collective (Liu Dao)
// BLURB //
The always-alert security manager (baoan) advises the man (laoban) to go up on elevator number 16 close to the curry shop. The elevator is tricky to find, hiding between the tailor and the money-changer. The girl (meinu) must be waiting in bed on floor 28. The boy (he thinks he is niubi) is looking at the scene through the mirror, but the reality he perceives is distorted by the steam of dim sum, the fizzing noise of neon tubes and his own confusing emotions. Hence, we cannot always see what is going on. The laoban nods and starts his journey in the maze to get what he deserves. The boy jumps out from behind the window and now everything is clear. He will be the hero that saves the meinu from the evil, he thinks. He runs over the barking toy dogs and no grandma can stop him, but the baoan’s enormous body is impenetrable. The boy tries to explain, but the baoan can’t speak Putonghua. The laoban looks back and winks. He remembers the time when he was the boy. We smile. The elevator’s door closes, and we don’t know what happens next. It’s all up to the boy’s imagination.
