"The Song of Zhou Xuan" (周璇之歌)
"The Song of Zhou Xuan" by island6 Art Collective (Liu Dao)
// BLURB //
Imagine you go back in time and arrive on the Bund in Shanghai. It’s 1937, the golden era of jazz and cinema. Along with international capital, Western entertainment culture had just streamed into the city. Dancehalls, bars and night clubs had opened to entertain Western and Chinese elites. Buck Clayton had just arrived from the States with his trumpet and taught a whole generation of musicians how to swing. And the others learned how to dance to it. You walk into a nightclub and hear something peculiar. An extremely high-pitched voice sings what they call jazz, but it sounds like Chinese folk music to you. You are mesmerized by the voice and ask what she is singing about. “Shanghai nights, love, rainbows…” she’d say. You want to talk to her, but she leaves the stage and disappears. You try to wait for her at the entrance, but it’s three in the morning. You don’t speak Chinese anyway. You leave and wander around in the city looking for her. Days go by like this. And you finally see her. It’s her face on the billboard of the Grand Theater. And you know you fell in love.
