“We must just keep buggering on”  -- Winston Churchill
This apparent truism smuggles more profound truth than you would suppose an old chestnut to do. Churchill’s life provides a study of exactly what he meant. Facing insurmountable odds during the Second World War, Churchill maintained civility, humor, and kindness. His heart didn’t get hard, he didn’t become a robot, and he never lost hope that he would help lead the Allied forces to victory. He communicated his thoughts and feelings to his followers in a transformative way, unlocking within his constituency the very key to buggering on: hope. As a unifier and solidifying agent, Churchill is a beacon similar to Sun Yat-sen is for the Chinese. As the man who modernized China, Sun felt himself at the fore of the many issues of his day, responsible for ushering in the changes necessary for China to again become competitive on the world stage. How do we remember leaders such as these, that keep buggering on when the odds are against them? How do we eulogize those who rebirthed our cultures in such powerful ways? How do we maintain the past while authentically bursting into the future?
