"What Lies Beyond the Wall" (墙外是什么假象)
// BLURB //
The 1933 Hollywood film, King Kong, is iconic in the dilemma it presents: when confronted with the knowledge of something bigger, something better – out there, just out of reach – how do we choose to chase it? Whether, despite its appeal, we are truly meant to possess it. For the protagonists of the film it was leaving the comfort of civilization in order to find adventure, for Kong it was leaving the comfort of the jungle in pursuit of beauty. As viewers we are left standing upon the wall, walls that enclose us representing protection and order, looking onward towards the unknown. In graffiti, the walls hold the story for those who are willing to read, regardless of their vantage point. It prompts discourse on the status of art placed outside the gallery space when the physical barriers defining what is public and what is private are art themselves. Do we leave the comfort of the walls? Is whatever lays on one side any different from the other?
