"Wire Ballerina" (线上的芭蕾舞者)
"Wire Ballerina" by island6 Art Collective (Liu Dao)
// BLURB //
Every little girl’s dream is to become a ballerina. But twenty years later and all grown up reality is far from that. As working women, they face a different balancing act each day. Society says women should climb the career ladder, while their ovaries say “hey, girl, just get kids!” So how can a woman ’s life still be in balance? Alexander Calder found equilibrium in the abstract confusion of wires and plates. Piet Mondrian perfectly harmonized the contrasts between red, yellow, blue, black and white. This is the kind of balance we are looking for. After all, what do Degas’s pastel ballerinas tell us about being the ballerina? What do we learn about the daily struggles of women in a male world? Kiki Smith’s delicate etching of a ballet dancer or Eleanor Antin’s alter ego, Eleanor Antinov show a battle of finding peace within one’s own body, rather than scratching an imaginary surface. However, regardless of the artist’s sex, in the end, artworks are just images of dreams and hopes with no instructions. So, here’s a solution: How about, instead of stressing out about this “work-life” balance, we place a cushion underneath the tightropes and loose the fear of falling down?
